Taste the Great Outdoors: New Beers at Lake of Bays

TTGO-Horiz-1000x80

Saturday, April 29th, 2017 (Baysville, ON):  Today at the brewery, we’re celebrating the launch of 3 new beers in our lineup. It’s almost our seventh beerthday (May 21st, 2010), and we’ve made some big changes to the look and flavour of our year-round selection.

We proudly introduce Switchback Pilsner, Broken Axe APA, and Oxtongue IPA as new mainstays of our core lineup.  Spark House is staying on board as a leader of the red ales with a fresh coat of paint. Brewers Dan Unkerskov, Mike Pawlick, Andrew Walsh and Mark Campbell spent the winter concocting innumerable pilot batches for bold new brews. The result: three exciting new flavours that deliver a satisfying taste of the great outdoors.

The updated design of our tall cans embraces our home in Ontario’s wilderness, a site of escape and discovery for many Canadians. The feeling of wanderlust, and of immersing oneself in the outdoors, is celebrated in our new brands with modern and compelling artwork that captures the awe-inspiring beauty of our region.

Check out the brewery today to sample the goods, talk to the brewers and indulge in free pork sliders served up by Grand-dad Smith. If you can’t join us this time not, come find us as we tour beer festivals across Ontario to celebrate these natural beauties! Look for the bright yellow tent in Muskoka, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Kingston, Peterborough, Georgetown and London (see full tour). You can also find our beer at the LCBO, The Beer Store, and select grocery stores and fine bars & restaurants across the province.

A lot has changed since we first opened in 2010: craft beer exploded onto the scene, the number craft breweries quintupled, tall cans continued their march to the top, beer arrived in grocery stores and beer drinkers got a whole lot more adventurous in their tastes. We hope you’ll join us for another seven years of outdoor adventure in the ever-changing world that is craft.

Now for some eye candy! Read on, McDuff.

SH-BackFront_vSpark House Red Ale

In the heart of the forest, the spark house stands alone. Drawing its deep, smooth character from chocolate and roasted malts, this full-bodied red ale finishes dry and sits high above the rest.

Like the fire towers that watch over Lake of Bays, our red has stood the test of time as our most popular brew. Ole Sparky, the Sparkle Horse, or Spark House as we lovingly call it, continues to trend high among old and new craft beer drinkers as an undeniably balanced yet robust beer for any occasion.

SB-BackFront-WebSwitchback Pilsner

A Switchback is a path to the summit for the determined and adventurous. It takes a little longer and more work to get there but is always worth it. This light-bodied beer with slight bitterness is for those who appreciate the journey as much as the destination.

Switchback pours with a brilliant golden hue and dense white foam. Aromatics are of fresh-cut hay with slight floral notes and the unmistakable graininess that is the hallmark of a traditional German-style pilsner. The mouth feel is light-bodied with a subtle hint of citrus and the pleasant tanginess of Hallertau hops. Finishes clean and refreshing. Recipe by our resident Dane, Dan Unkerskov.

BA-BackFront-WebBroken Axe American Pale Ale

A broken axe signifies your work is done for the day — so take off your gloves and claim your reward. Stacked with bold flavour and bright citrus tones, this beer is a cut above.

Named for its bold clean-cut flavour, Broken Axe American Pale Ale is a crisp and juicy reward to a hard day’s work. The welcoming aromas of peach and apricot develop into a tropical splash of lemon and grapefruit. Centennial, Wakatu and Idaho 7 hops are on double-duty, offering a balance of medium bitter flavour with a sharp citrus twist. Chalk it up as another cutting edge creation by our homegrown brewers: Mike Pawlick and Andrew Walsh.

Malts: 2-Row Pale, Vienna, Carafoam, Wheat Malt Hops: Centennial, Idaho 7, Wakatu.

OX-BackFront-WenOxtongue India Pale Ale

Rivers are the roads of the forest. The Oxtongue flows naturally but boldly in Lake of Bays, and is the beer you can bank on to deliver a deep malt flavour with a splash of citrus notes. Let it flow.

Take your tastebuds on a ride with the Oxtongue IPA for a journey that’s hop-forward and dry with a refreshing citrus twist.  You’re greeted by a touch of boozy heat on the nose that envelops a hint of lemon, suggesting the grapefruit flavour swirling in the medium-bodied warm copper ale. Welcome a slight Vienna malt sweetness that trails off with a lingering pine bitterness. Hats off to the recipe leads, Andrew Walsh and Mike Pawlick.
