ABOUT SALOON SARSAPARILLA ALE

Sarsaparilla is the “root” that makes root beer so dang tasty. But don’t be fooled. This ale smells good enough to eat, but is more ale than (root) beer on the palate. And at 7.5% alc./vol. it ain’t no sodee-pop.

We brewed it with Ontario-grown Chinook hops (from Clear Valley Hop Farm in Collingwood.) Belgian-style yeast gives it a nice bite and thirst-quenching finish.

So set aside your heat, sally on up the bar and order yourself a Saloon Sarsaparilla. Nobody’s gonna call you sissy. Download our Saloon Sarsaparilla Info Page (PDF for printing.)

Ultimate Lake of Bays Experience winners

Lil and Peter about to depart on their float plane flight with Lake Country Airways.
Lil and Peter about to head out with Lake Country Airways.
Fall colours at their best.
The fall colours at their best.

Congratulations to Lil and Peter M., winners of the Ulitmate Lake of Bays Experience summer 2014.

The two enjoyed their prize on the weekend of September 28. Lucky ducks, they got perfect weather, and the autumn leaves were at their peak.

But Lil can tell you in her own words…and pictures.

005Peter&TopShelf002-CujoJakeStitchesFirst off I would like to say from the very beginning to the very end our experience was amazing! The drive into the area was absolutely beautiful. Around every corner it was a wall of spectacular colour. We arrived at your Lake of Bays Brewery and had a very warm welcome from Liz and Jean. After sampling a few of your beers, Liz took the time to explain the history behind the brewery and then took us on a tour and we both found it very interesting. She did a great job explaining the process to us and we were very impressed.  We had a nice lunch at your picnic tables and then went on our way to Cleveland’s House.  On top of that we received a 24 mix of all your beers. That was a great bonus!  Emoji

Wow … Cleveland’s House is an amazing property. Since we arrived earlier than check-in time we took advantage of that time to look around. A beautiful place with so much to do and so many beautiful buildings and gardens.

018-Peter&Jeff

Our Float Plane flight (Lake Country Airways) was at 3 pm. so we eagerly waited on the dock to see the plane arrive. Our pilot Jeff was awesome and took us on a beautiful flight around the Lake of Bays area and we were both awestruck at the beauty from the sky. It was like a painting that never ended. We both enjoyed it very, very much! We were so happy the weather turned out as amazing as it did because it was just a perfect day for that flight.

After the flight we checked into our room at Cleveland’s House. It was just beautiful. We had a room at the Terrace Suites and had a wonderful large deck with a view of the lake. Couldn’t ask for anything more, it was very, very nice! We later had an wonderful dinner at Cleveland’s House and the staff and food was truly amazing. Peter had steak and I had chicken and both meals were delicious! Kudos to the chef! We then had a wonderful relaxing evening and woke to a beautiful mist over the water which we could see from our room. We actually were still full from the previous night’s dinner and didn’t even go for breakfast! But we did enjoy the wonderful coffee that was in our suite outside on our terrace.

We would both like to thank you for the amazing Lake of Bays Experience. A wonderful getaway with amazing weather and wonderful memories. Thanks so much to everyone involved. We will definitely be back to the area again and would definitely recommend your brewery, the Float Plane ride and Cleveland’s House!

Since I took over 400 pictures of our experience, I had no idea which ones to send …lol.

Thanks again …
Peter and Lil

10 Point IPA Returns

Celebrate sweater weather with 10 Point IPA. Here they are looking all cozy and inviting at the LCBO.

(September 2014) It’s that time again. So stow away the flip flops, haul out the sweaters and raise a glass of 10 Point IPA. Here’s to turning leaves and crackling fires. (One in front and one behind, hopefully.)

This is year three for this popular autumn seasonal, an uncommonly balanced IPA. A balanced IPA? There’s some debate among craft beer aficionados as to whether there even is such a thing, but Darren and Dan (the fellas in charge of the barley nectar here) insist that it’s right here; they made it so. Give it a try and you’ll see. And this year, they’ve tinkered with the recipe a little, raising the IBUs a wee bit, to 45.

You can find it on tap and at LCBOs across Ontario, as well as select markets in Manitoba and Northeastern USA. Click <here> for a printable PDF information page.

Survivorman sets out on craft beer adventure with LB

Picture of Les Stroud, aka SurvivormanBaysville, ON — (July 23, 2014) Lake of Bays Brewing Company and Les Stroud Productions are proud to announce that the two have teamed up to produce a series of Survivorman-themed beers.

“We are looking forward to developing some truly wild and unique beers,” said Darren Smith, president and CEO of Lake of Bays Brewing. “Survivorman is about resilience in nature, and Lake of Bays is proudly based and branded around the frontier and ‘the industrious North.’ It is such a great fit for both of us. We can hardly wait.”

Les Stroud is equally enthusiastic. “Survivorman and Canadian-made, awesome beer by Lake of Bays Brewing. There is no greater match up in the history of civilization!”

The company plans to release the first beer in the Survivorman Series in early 2015.

Les Stroud is the internationally acclaimed creator, filmmaker and star of Survivorman, the TV phenomenon in which Stroud documents his struggles in the harshest of conditions in wildernesses around the world. Survivorman is one of the highest rated shows in the history of Travel and Escape Canada, OLN Canada, the Science Channel US and Discovery Channel US.

Survivorman virtually spawned the entire genre of ‘survival TV’ and remains one of the highest-rated repeat shows on the Discovery Channel. Stroud is also a musician, an activist and a father, as well as an advanced survival trainer for the Canadian Military Armed Forces.

One of Ontario’s fastest-growing craft breweries, Lake of Bays Brewing Company has four year-round beers, four seasonal beers and a series of limited edition beers. Lake of Bays is the official brewery of the NHL Alumni Association and the CFL Alumni Association.

River Walker Ginger Lemon Ale – Now available at the LCBO

River Walker Ginger Lemon Ale - Bottle and glass
Click image for a downloadable PDF information sheet about the beer.

May 16, 2014 — Just in time to kick off the May 2-4 weekend, it’s the return of Lake of Bays’ summer seasonal, River Walker Ginger Lemon Ale.

This is the second year that River Walker has been released. The recipe originated with the OCB’s Iron Brewer competition two years ago, in which participating brewers receive a bag of ingredients from which to make their entry, à la Iron Chef. From the bag that arrived, Head Brewer Dan Unkerskov selected fresh ginger, lemon, and Magnum and Legacy hops, among other things. His creation took third prize, and Lake of Bays’ summer seasonal was born.

While Lake of Bays has built a reputation for well-balanced true-to-style core brands that someone new to craft beer can enjoy, River Walker bucks that trend. At 65 IBUs (International Bittering Units, a measurement of hop flavour) it’s our biggest, hoppiest beer ever. (For comparison purposes: our lagers clock in at 15 IBUs, our 10 Point IPA is 40 IBUs.)

Last year’s River Walker release was even hoppier. River Walker Summer Ale, as it was then called, clocked in at a puckering 85 IBUs. We were told that some, expecting a fruity summer offering, got more than they bargained for, so this year we have dialed the hops back slightly and updated the name.

River Walker is now available on tap at select pubs and restaurants across Ontario. Go to www.beerfinder.ca to find the one nearest you. River Walker will also be coming to an LCBO near you shortly, (SKU 343103). Keep an eye on BeerFinder or the LCBO’s handy finder app, LCBO On The Go.
