Craft Beer in Grocery Stores!

Darren picking up a can of Spark House at the Loblaws checkoutToronto, ON – (December 15th, 2015): Big news in the beer world today. By now, everyone has seen the photos of Kathleen Wynne at the Loblaws checkout, commenting “It’s nice to get carded.” Did they pop the question to Darren here? “Yes, they actually did.”

Loblaws has expressed their commitment to Ontario Craft Breweries by dedicating 50% of their shelf space to local beer. This exceeds the government’s 20% shelf space minimum for Ontario craft products.  We ‘re hopeful that many other grocers will follow suit.

Past sales helped to get the brewers ready as overall the craft beer market looks to expand from a roughly 4% market share in the province to upward of 8% to 10%. – via  Patrick Bales, Packet & Times

Fifty-eight grocers have been authorized to date. By provincial regulation, the maximum allowed in Ontario is 450. The first round of bidding for the authorization of beer sales at grocery stores closed on November 17th, 2015. The next round will take place in 2016, and Ontario.ca predicts 150 grocers to be authorized by May 2017. Recent news articles suggest that the maximum may be reached by the end of the same year.

So far we’ve received orders from 23 grocery stores and expect more to come. Let’s raise a toast to the biggest change that Ontario beer lovers have seen since the of prohibition, more than 80 years ago!
